Bringing your baby home….<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Bringing home a new puppy is fun and exciting but can be overwhelming if you are not prepared. We wanted to give you some ideas that may help your little furry bundle of joy settle in to your home a little easier.  We allow our puppies to leave at 8 weeks of age because we feel they adapt better to their new homes at this age. We feel it is important to hand your puppy as little stress as possible during this transition. We suggest just focusing on immediate family members and keeping your puppy at home for the first week or two except, of course, the mandatory nine week vaccine visit to your trusted veterinarian. Puppies are not fully equipped to handle parks, pet stores and walks in the park until they have received at least 3 vaccinations. Around twelve weeks of age is when you can more comfortably start socializing your puppy outside of your home. 

French Bulldogs have very sensitive stomachs. There are a lot of videos of French Bulldogs eating food as they sit on the couch in clothes. My thought is always…did the puppy visit the vet afterwards with a gastro-intestinal issue? French Bulldogs need to eat dog food. They need to eat the same dog food everyday and it does not need to be switched up because you feel they are not eating. Dogs are like us in the fact that they too can acquire stomach upset from eating new foods.  Should your puppy stop eating or become finicky about their food my guess is there is an underlying issue or your puppy is simply not that hungry. Give it a couple days and make sure your puppy is not losing weight. Switching foods will only exacerbate the issue. Chances are if your puppy has been eating the same food for months with no issues then the food is not the problem. Call me! We can sort it out together. 
Many health issues with the French Bulldog resort from over-eating and not enough exercise. Many people treat the French Bulldog like a baby doll. Yes, it’s cute to put them in strollers…I have done this too! There are photos on this website to prove I enjoy babying my dogs. However, balance is the key to a healthy dog and they need exercise. The French Bulldog can over heat in the summer so make sure you do not leave your Frenchie outdoors too long. Leaving them outside is not exercise they still need to be actively engaged. There are many indoor activities you can do with your French Bulldog to keep the weight at bay. In the summer I cut back on the food I feed as well. 
French Bulldogs do not need to become Kings and Queens of the house. I promise you will regret allowing them to take up your bed and couches. While it is sweet when they are little it can become bothersome when they are bigger. Remember, even though they are smaller they still possess the mind of a dog. Allowing them to think they rule the roost could resort into unwanted behavior. Many times the behavior that results is your French Bulldog challenging you when you want him or her to do something or he or she will become overly protective of you. And yes, this starts when you do not put your dog in their place from day one. You can still love your puppy on the couch or in your bed but only when he or she is invited to come sit with you. I use the command “Up” This also becomes helpful should you bring another dog into the house. All dogs are territorial and by setting this rule you are setting boundaries to them at the same time.
